Time for a real truck

Postby Mojave Magic » Sat Jul 24, 2010 5:33 pm

My little Ram 50 has been a good truck that ran trouble free every time and didn't cost me anything other than gas. Unfortunately, my needs have changed and it's just too small. I'll be sad to sell it, but my new truck should help me get over that :D . I've been watching craigslist for a while and found something else. I had to drive out to Long Island at 5pm on a Friday, but it was worth it. Specs and pictures below.

1998 Dodge 3500 quad cab 4x4 dually
Laramie SLT
12v 5.9 Cummins
146000 miles with a rebuilt injection pump and rebuilt transmission somewhere near 130K
3.55 limited slip rear
power leather seats
power windows, locks, and mirrors
heated mirrors
cd player

It has one spot with a little rust on the drivers door that started when someone backed into it in a parking lot. Other than that and a little rust in the bed under the bed liner, even the frame is great. I haven't seen too many this age with so little rust. I got it from the original owner, who retired and didn't need it anymore. He never even towed with it. The hitch receiver looks like it has never even held a hitch. He also told me that he's seen 23mpg on the highway.

It's not perfect cosmetically inside, but still looks pretty sharp outside. Mechanically it's very good and runs real strong. It just needs the usual tinkering like a broken parking brake cable and stuff to be 100%. He didn't clean it very good or he would have gotten more for it. I got it for $6k, book was $8,400 so I'm pretty happy.

You wont be too disapointed in that truck. There in abudance everywhere and parts are easy too come by. Also look in pull a part yards for interior. You can get an extra 100hp for free almost with that 5.9L if you are interested. Just start looking for fuel plate mods and cranking the star wheel on the net. Keep the fuel filter bowl cleaned out and you will keep your fuel milage up.

I'd love to bump up the power, but don't want to toast the trans just yet. When it starts to slip, I'll upgrade it to handle the power, but it was rebuilt fairly recently, so that's a long way off. It's going to get a good cleaning and fluids and filters all around. I found some nice black and gray seat covers too, so it should be looking good inside soon. A good brush guard is the only short term mod I'm looking at, because we have a lot of deer and there's some expensive looking parts up front. It's not an expense, it's an investment or so I keep telling myself :D

Enjoy it. I had to give up my real truck for a toy truck. :(
When I sold my 5th wheel, I had to sell my Tundra to go with it to make the sale. My husband would not let me buy one of the larger Tundras to replace it; I bought a Tacoma. Although it's decked out with all the options, I miss my V8. The V6 just doesn't have the same torque.
